Since 2005, Rio Tinto has been digging for lithium in Serbia.
It was only last year that the citizens of the Jadar Valley realized just how dangerous this project is for their livelihoods when Dr. Dragana Djordjevic informed them of the toxic threat to not just their water source, but to millions of Serbians and even some waters of surrounding countries.
Now, with more and more information, the citizens of the Jarad Valley are making their voices heard – they don’t want this mine. They don’t want to give up the most fertile soil in Serbia, they don’t want 19,000 of them to be displaced or severely effected in order for 700 of them to have jobs as miners. Their land is sustainable, durable and their livelihood. It is not the role of Serbian farmers to service the consumption of the western world. So their message to Rio Tinto is loud and clear – “Mars Sa Drine” which means, “Get off the Drina River.”
Footage for this video was obtained from: @NOVA.S, @MARKAZVAKA and Milan Mijatovic from @PAKT-Loznica – thank you to all the locals who are so courageously willing to tell their stories, and to all the experts who are speaking out against the mine.
